HyperVM Owner Suicide
Jun 10, 2009 - 2:04 AM - by THS
HyperVM Owner kills himself.

It appears that the CEO/Owner/Developer Ligesh of LxLabs Software - HyperVM, Kloxo has committed suicide (hanged himself), the cause is unknown but could be due to the large 12 exploits found in his software.

Hosting provider fsckvps was recently hacked but this could have been due to weak passwords and or the use of the exploits in the HyperVM which caused the hack of of HyperVM,LXAdmin,Kloxo. The customers of Lxlabs are now wondering what their next step is, do they wait around for updates or move to a different vps hosting control panel. It appears that LxAdmin was a one man show, but more information will be discovered with time (will the company discontinue or will it be bought out by another company).

The Pirate Bay Press Conference
Feb 16, 2009 - 7:10 PM - by THS
I am sure many of you know that The Pirate Bay (TPB) had a press conference February 15,2009. There were many members of the press that wanted to attend but due to their bad behavior they were banned from the press conference. TorrentFreak has a nice bit of information on the conference for those of us that unfortunately don't speak Swedish.
Just hours ago The Pirate Bay and Piratbyrån held a joint press conference at the Museum of Technology in Stockholm. It was broadcasted live on the web and Pirate Bay co-founders Peter Sunde and Gottfrid Svartholm spoke at length. Here is a breakdown of some of the key points.

The joint

Sony Closing Major Division
Jan 07, 2009 - 9:28 PM - by THS
A rumor is circulating that Sony is on the verge of announcing the closure of one or more of their major factories sometime within the next month. Sony has denied the existence of such a plan, but industry experts agree that in the face of declined sales and overstocked inventory, big changes within the company will be necessary. "We do not plan to announce additional restructuring measures at this time," spokesman Atsuo Omagari said, in response to the rumor. "We don't have any such plan."

England No Privacy
Jan 05, 2009 - 1:21 AM - by THS
Seems that England computer users are loosing more of their privacy each day.

It’s one thing to have a camera shoved up your ass where ever you go in England but that doesn’t appear to be good enough for the powers that be in England; or the European Union. According to a report in the Times Online today the English Home Office has very quietly (I wonder why) adopted a new plan that will allow police across Britain to routinely hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant.
Without a warrant!

Apple Store Shutdown Threat
Oct 02, 2008 - 2:07 PM - by THS
It seems Apple might close down their store as the costs are getting pretty high for them with the royalty fees, will they increase the overall price of music to cover the costs. I don't use iTunes as I purchase my music from the retail store, but I know many of you do for your ipods .
NEW YORK (Fortune) -- For five years, Apple's iTunes Music Store has been the Internet's most successful music store. But as music publishers have sought a higher share of its proceeds, Apple has threatened to shutter iTunes.
The Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, D.C. is expected to rule Thursday on a request by the National Music Publishers' Association to increase royalty rates paid to its members on songs purchased from online music stores like iTunes. The publishers association wants rates raised from 9 cents to 15 cents a track - a 66% hike.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Cloud Computing
Oct 02, 2008 - 1:53 PM - by THS
Well it appears that Microsoft is moving into the Cloud Computing Industry even more.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Microsoft would soon be releasing an OS for cloud computing, tentatively titled Windows Cloud. Like Windows Home Server was a specialized release of Vista with new components to serve its role, Cloud will carry specialized components for cloud applications.
Ballmer details that it’s a separate project from Windows 7, but further details remain nebulous. What cloud computing applications are so important that they require a new OS? Cloud computing is a tremendous buzzword, but is there actually so large a demand that an OS dedicated to it is needed? More simply, what cloud applications are out there?
Apparently Microsoft has answers to these questions. It’s possible that more details will be released at the Microsoft

Italy can't stop TPB (The Pirate Bay)
Sep 25, 2008 - 9:05 PM - by THS
According to TorrentFreak, an Italian judge tried to keep Italian users from permanently accessing The Pirate Bay services. Well the Court of Bergamo did not take that so well and were able to get Italian users back to the TPB.
The Pirate Bay has successfully appealed the decision of an Italian judge who had ordered ISPs to block access to the popular BitTorrent tracker last month. The Court of Bergamo decided that this block was unlawful, and that Italian users should regain access to the site.

From reading what TPB has on their legal page none of the things they do are illegal as all they are doing is hosting a .torrent file which is not illegal as they do not store any of the content on their servers. I can understand that companies feel that what they are doing is illegal but:
a. They are in Sweden
b. They host no... [Read More]

Windows Vista Security Breakthrough

Windows Vista Security Breakthrough

AT THIS WEEK'S Black Hat security conference, two security researchers will discuss their findings which could completely open Windows Vista to hackers.
Mark Dowd of IBM Internet Security Systems and Alexander Sotirov, of Vmware Inc. have together discovered a hack that can be used to bypass all memory protection safeguards that Microsoft programmed into the much-maligned Windows Vista.
The methods employed have enabled the researchers to bypass Vista's Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and other protections by simply loading malware through a standard web browser.
Dowd and Sotrirov were able to load any content they desired anyway on a user's machine using a variety of scripting languages, including ActiveX, Java, and .NET objects.
From a distance these seem like the usual standard exploiting of bsic-security, however other researchers have... [Read More]

Vbulletin 3.7.0 GOLD/STABLE almost near!
Apr 22, 2008 - 2:15 AM - by THS
Vbulletin 3.7.0 is almost here
As those of you who have been keeping an eye on the bug tracker will probably be aware, the frequency and severity of bugs being reported has dropped right off in the past few weeks, and I believe that it has reached the point where we should declare vBulletin 3.7.0 stable and do a final, 'gold' release.

vBulletin 3.7.0 Stable/Gold will be released in the coming week.

I do not anticipate the release of any further release candidates in the interim period.

Today, we will be updating vBulletin.com to run the final version of the code, and we will allow this to run over the weekend to get some final, extra uninterrupted testing done on a production site.

Needless to say, should you find more bugs over the weekend, don't hesitate to report them as soon as

Microsoft will support Windows XP until 2010 -- on low power laptops only
Apr 03, 2008 - 7:04 PM - by News Poster

Last week we were speculating that Microsoft could issue a stay of execution for Windows XP. Computer makers are supposed to stop loading the OS on new PCs at the end of June. But here's the thing, some of the most popular laptops on the market this year are pretty much incapable of running Windows Vista.

That's because low power ultraportable devices like the ... [Read More]
