Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Cloud Computing

Well it appears that Microsoft is moving into the Cloud Computing Industry even more.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Microsoft would soon be releasing an OS for cloud computing, tentatively titled Windows Cloud. Like Windows Home Server was a specialized release of Vista with new components to serve its role, Cloud will carry specialized components for cloud applications.
Ballmer details that it’s a separate project from Windows 7, but further details remain nebulous. What cloud computing applications are so important that they require a new OS? Cloud computing is a tremendous buzzword, but is there actually so large a demand that an OS dedicated to it is needed? More simply, what cloud applications are out there?
Apparently Microsoft has answers to these questions. It’s possible that more details will be released at the Microsoft Developer Conference or WinHEC.
